Exemption Policy
The “Exemption Policy” outlines the criteria and process for granting exemptions to applicants who have completed relevant qualifications or certifications prior to enrolling in the BSc Degree in Project Management. This exemption policy ensures that students who have relevant prior qualifications receive appropriate recognition for their prior learning, while also maintaining the academic rigor and integrity of the program.
Exemptions are typically granted for specific courses within the program. Here’s the exemption policy for your program:
I. Introduction:
The Exemption Policy for the 2-year (Top-Up) BSc Degree in Project Management is designed to acknowledge and credit students for their prior learning and qualifications that are directly relevant to the program’s curriculum.
Exemptions, when granted, allow students to bypass specific courses and requirements in recognition of their prior educational achievements.
Holders of a Level 4 Diploma or Level 4 Certificate with the relevant years of working experience, is exempted from the first year of the 3 years degree and gain entry directly into the second year of the degree program and is required to complete 2 years of study instead of 3 years.
II. Eligibility for Exemptions:
Applicants may be eligible for exemptions from specific courses within the BSc Degree in Project Management if they meet the following criteria:
- Relevant Prior Qualifications: Applicants must provide evidence of having successfully completed coursework, certifications, or qualifications that are deemed equivalent to specific courses within the program. The relevancy and equivalency of the prior qualifications will be assessed by the University.
- Demonstrated Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate a level of proficiency and knowledge in the subject matter of the specific course for which they seek exemption. This can be achieved through examination, portfolio assessment, or other methods as determined by the institution.
- Validity of Prior Qualifications: Exemptions will only be granted for qualifications completed within 5-10 years prior to the date of application.
III. Application Process:
- Applicants must submit a formal application for exemptions along with the necessary supporting documentation, which may include transcripts, certificates, syllabi, or any other relevant information.
- The institution will review the application and assess the relevancy and equivalency of the prior qualifications.
- Depending on the specific circumstances and requirements, applicants may be required to participate in an exemption assessment, which may include examinations, interviews, or practical demonstrations.
IV. Granting of Exemptions:
- Exemptions will result in the reduction of the total number of credits required for program completion, but students will still need to meet the minimum credit requirements for graduation.
V. Appeals:
Applicants have the right to appeal decisions related to exemption applications according to the university’s established appeal procedures.
VI. Limits on Exemptions:
- Students can apply for exemptions for any modules that match prior learning/experience.
- Students must complete all courses not exempted from, a research project and dissertation.
VII. Expiry of Exemptions:
Exemptions granted are typically valid for the duration of the student’s enrollment in the program.
VIII. Transfer of Exemptions:
Exemptions granted by may not necessarily be recognized by other educational institutions, and the transfer of exemptions to other programs or institutions is subject to their policies and regulations.
Exempted Qualifications for Advanced Standing:
- This exemption policy aims to recognize the qualifications, certifications, and extensive professional experience of individuals applying for admission to our 2-year (Top-Up) BSc Degree in Project Management. Applicants who meet specific criteria may be eligible for exemptions from certain modules within the program.
- Exemption for Holders of Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification, Scrum Master Certification, Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP) Certification, Program Management Professional (PgMP) Certification, Construction Professional in Built Environment Projects (PMI-CP) Certification, and 2+ Years of Working Experience).
Exempted Qualifications:
Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification:
- Holders of a valid and current PMP certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) are eligible for exemptions.
- Exemptions will be considered for modules closely aligned with the PMP certification content.
- Applicants must have 1+ years of relevant work experience in project management, or a closely related field may be eligible for advanced entry exemptions.
PRINCE2 Certification:
- Mature students (typically aged 21 and above) who hold a valid PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner certification are eligible for exemptions.
- Exemptions will be considered for modules closely aligned with PRINCE2 principles and practices.
- Applicants must have more than 3 years of relevant work experience in project management, or a closely related field may be eligible for advanced entry exemptions.
CAPM (Certified associate in project management) Credential:
- Holders of a valid and current CAPM credential from PMI are eligible for exemptions.
- Exemptions will be considered for modules that cover foundational project management topics included in the CAPM certification.
- Applicants must have more than 3 years of relevant work experience in project management, or a closely related field may be eligible for advanced entry exemptions.
Scrum Master Certification:
- Individuals holding a valid Scrum Master certification, such as Certified Scrum Master (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM), are eligible for exemptions.
- Exemptions will be considered for modules aligned with Agile and Scrum methodologies in project management.
- Applicants must have 2+ years of relevant work experience in project management, or a closely related field may be eligible for advanced entry exemptions.
Program Management Professional (PgMP) Certification:
- Holders of a valid and current PgMP certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) are eligible for exemptions.
- Exemptions will be considered for modules closely related to program management and strategic project management.
- Applicants must have 1+ years of relevant work experience in project management, or a closely related field may be eligible for advanced entry exemptions.
Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP) Certification :
- Individuals with a valid and current PfMP certification from PMI are eligible for exemptions.
- Exemptions will be considered for modules focused on portfolio management and strategic alignment of projects.
- Applicants must have 1+ years of relevant work experience in project management, or a closely related field may be eligible for advanced entry exemptions.
Construction Professional in Built Environment Projects (PMI-CP) Certification:
- Holders of a valid and current PMI-CP certification are eligible for exemptions.
- Exemptions will be considered for modules specifically related to construction project management and built environment projects.
- Applicants must have 2+ years of relevant work experience in project management, or a closely related field may be eligible for advanced entry exemptions.
Exemption Process:
- Applicants must submit a formal exemption request as part of their application for admission to the program.
- The exemption request should include the following documentation:
- Copies of relevant certifications (e.g, PMP, PRINCE2, CAPM, PMI-CP, PfMP, PgMP, CSM).
- Detailed work experience documentation, including job descriptions, roles, responsibilities, and duration of employment.
- The Admissions Committee will review exemption requests and decide based on the provided documentation.
- Exemptions will only be granted for modules where there is a clear alignment between the applicant’s qualifications or work experience and the module’s learning outcomes.
- Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their exemption request as part of the admission process.
- Exemptions will be considered based on a detailed assessment of the applicant’s work experience and its alignment with the curriculum content.
- Exemptions are granted at the discretion of the university, and the decision of the Admissions Committee is final.
Exemption Limits:
- The maximum number of credits that can be exempted claimed from this 2-year BSc Degree in Project Management is 80 credits for those qualified for additional exemptions.
- Applicants granted exemptions will still need to meet the minimum credit requirements of 160 credits for the degree program, including:
Dissertation (30 credits).
Professional Development (20 credits): Individual/independent practical assignment/project.
